Manic Sonatina for Clarinet & Piano

$5.00

Manic Sonatina for Clarinet & Piano is a piece whose movements function cohesively in a manner that is antithetical to preconceived notions of cohesion. The disparate moods, rhythms, tonalities, and articulations of each individual movement play against one another and create the manic, unconnected feel; however, it is this opposition to one another that actually melds the piece together. Helping this process along is a recurring theme hidden within each movement; it is evident and prominent in the first, short and interrupting in the second, and developed and subordinate in the third.

Movement for Piano Trio No. 1: Variations on a Gigue; Trio

$5.00

From the first few bars of the piece, there is a driving force that propels the music forward. The rhythmic ostinato figure that features prominently throughout the variations skips from instrument to instrument, register to register, color to color, but alway undergirds the melodic figures that rise above. Even when the violin and cello present a new idea after the first few iterations, the piano maintains the momentum in its left hand. After further fragmentation and variation, the development gives way to the brief trio section. While the rhythmic drive maintains itself, though in a more lulling than driving fashion, the voices become much more sparse and each performer has their own moment. The section is short-lived and the unrelenting motion of the variations soon kicks back into gear. The return of the variations continues on and the piece further unfolds until it brings itself to a resonant close, that it immediately undercuts with one more little spasm of motion.

Berceuse qui Coule

$5.00

This piece for piano began its existence solely as the flowing ostinato found throughout its form. From that seed of thought, the piece organically grew. The lyric melody, comprised mainly of parallel 10ths, floats above the constant motion of the left hand and returns in a manner that resembles a rondo. In between, there are breaks that both continue the current of the piece and slow down to a more reserved momentum and mood.

Reflections in an Autumn Pool

$5.00

Reflections in an Autumn Pool is a simple tone poem. The point of the piece is to transport the listener to a place solely through the use of musical ideas. The destination, in this case, is found within the title itself; however, the intended images will not be specified here.

Piano Sonata No. 1 “Coruscate with the sunrise”

$5.00

During the inception of “Coruscate with the sunrise” last fall, I was enrolled in Dr. Jerome Reed’s Piano Literature class. We covered a great deal of piano music, as is easily imagined. Inspired by this wealth of ideas and techniques, I threw my hat into the ring. This piece is an experiment for me. Generally, I use movements in pieces, but in the shadow of Liszt, I tried my hand at cohesive and unified structure. There are three motives in this piece used in various forms and guises. At times, they are neo-romantic, reminiscent of Rachmaninoff, lyric, feigning Chopin, or twelve-tone, like Schoenberg. There is even a fugue used in two places that employs all three motives. The end result is a piece with a wealth of contrasting emotions, styles, and inspirations, but in a decidedly new sound.
